Professional Indemnity and Malpractice Cover

 
The HPCSA clearly states that it is not compulsory for HPCSA registered professionals like dieticians to have malpractice cover. Although everything is in place for this, the legislation has not been promulgated and as such it is not a requirement at this point. In light of this, there have been a few dieticians enquiring to ADSA about professional indemnity cover which is why ADSA has looked into it.


The South African Society of Physiotherapy has medical malpractice insurance cover and public liability cover in place through Glenrand MIB. In an attempt to gain better negotiating power, they opted to open up this policy to other medical disciplines.
  2011 Rates are as follows:
- Medical malpractice and public liability cover - R510 per person per year
- on average the fees increase between 7 and 10% each year
 
This includes R2.5 million cover for medical malpractice and R2.5 million cover for public liability.
